Quilting

I have started quilting my quilt 'Peaks'. I decided to try some 505 basting spray which I haven't used before - mostly as practice because I want to quilt some voile fabric. I'm not sure how readily available this spray is in NZ - I got this can from Helen but sadly her shop is closing. For any local readers Fabricland in Papakura stock it at the moment.

It's really good! I basted the quilt on my cousin's large wooden kitchen floor. As far as I could tell, not too much overspray stickiness but as I haven't had to live with the kitchen floor post-basting I can't absolutely guarantee 'no mess'. Hopefully if there was a mess the children got the blame ;-)
I pin basted as well - I don't mind pinning at all and this quilt is quite big so I did it to be on the safe side.  I think on a smaller quilt you could get away without pinning at all.

I also finished up Mel's bee block - a pod. Her blocks will look amazing when they are all together - pods seem to be all the rage at the moment.

  1. The little peeks of Peaks look great. Im so looking forward to seeing it when its finished. And is that some turquoise pearl bracelet fabric we can see the back of? Still one of my favourite lines.

  3. I love spray baste. It cleans up easily with a little soapy water. I try to stock up on a sale ; )

  4. Thanks for the 505 tip. I haven't been able to find it anywhere and all attempts to buy online overseas have been foiled. I assume its a restricted import? Spotlight has some of its spray in stock at the moment, but that's not awesome. Although I tried generic crafting spray and that was super sticky. I suspect my machine needle won't like it though!
I pin too, especially around the edges, which always lift.

  5. You can get it down here at Stitch n Stuff in TA and I think Donna's Quilt Studio in Hamilton has it too. It's about $28 a can. I love spray basting as I hate this stage and it is so much quicker.

  6. I love 505 spray and use it on all of my quilts big and small as I am far to lazy to get the pins out ;-)

  7. I love 505 - I've just used it to baste a 116" x 116" quilt and didn't have any problems quilting it!

  8. 505 is the best! It is so quick and easy. The only time it ever gave me any trouble was when I tried to quilt a microfiber sheet backing. It was a litte slicker than regular quilting cotton and started to come un-basted when I was quilting! Peaks is looking beautiful!

  9. I've just bought myself some 505 and am liking so far. I haven't used it on a quilt yet as I'm worried about overspray but I'll get an old shower curtain and sort that out.

  10. I tried it but just didn't enjoy doing it!! Also annoying to spend money on a product that runs out (unlike pins!). I want to like it because it would make fmq so much easier - I might try it again on smaller quilts. Love your bee block!

  11. I have yet to try basting spray - I like that you tried it at someone else's house first - clever! haha!
