Pondering

I love going along to our Monday Modern meetings. There is always plenty to laugh about as well as food for thought.

Last night we heard from Linda talking about the process of her Lone Star makeover, and Heather who has done crazy bold things with her Moda Building blocks quilt. You can see what it used to look like here.

This caused me to head home from work in the daylight for once and take a better photo of my Moda BB quilt. You can guess where this is heading right?

My theme this year seems to be making quilts I'm not that fussed about and this one is no exception. I don't have any sort of art/design vocabulary to work with, so I'll just say it looks squished up, unbalanced and a bit grey. I didn't follow the original pattern layout because I wanted a smaller version and I suspect this is a major contributing factor.

This is what I'm pondering. Do I pick it apart and try to salvage it somehow, or just quilt it, bind it and give it away to the first interested passerby? The pondering is the result of the one block I really do love. (Top right corner).

  1. If you really don't like it I would be tempted to change the big block on the left... Maybe introduce some Aqua into the colours. Perhaps even swap the white for Aqua

  2. I think yours is nicely balanced with fabrics and colours. I know what you mean about feeling dissatisfied working on quilts that you don't love - it feels hard to justify putting more money and time into finishing something you don't really like. I agree your star with the deer in the centre is great - you could always turn it into a medallion style quilt, with the deer star in the middle, use the other blocks in a border, and then use the really big star on the back (and that wouldn't require attacking it with a rotary cutter like me)

  3. dear pondering... just joking! I too had real trouble with the blocks, they seemed all out of proportion to each other, either too big or too small! I made the decision to quit while I was ahead and downsized my quilt, but sadly it's still not one of my favorites! I guess I need to take a lesson from this... only make what you love!

  4. I reckon the prob with the moda mod blocks is that the big blocks are just too big. They dominate.

I quite like Heather's suggestion of medallionising it.

I do like the colours and fabrics in yours.

  6. Yeah I know what you mean, luckily a friend likes mine so it's going to her but it's a lot of money for something I'm not in love with! To me the balance of your quilt looks fine except the big block on the left which stands out with the light background. I think if that was less contrasty the whole quilt would snap into cohesion.

  7. I like the colours you have used, however nothing really seems to POP from them. Maybe use the big block you like for a medallion type quilt or dare I say, unpick some sections and put in some other blocks with most of the same colours and a new added colour.

  8. I like it! How big is it? Could it be a lap quilt?

  9. I love the colours, and each block by itself is gorgeous. Could you just add in some more negative space?
